Today. Your Daily Cockpit
The 2-minute scan that orients your entire workday
By the end of this module
Why Today Exists
Today is not a to-do list. Foundry doesn't ship a task manager and never will, there are dozens of better ones. Today is the orientation surface: a 2-minute scan that answers four questions before you start working.
1. What did I promise other people that's due? (Commitments)
2. What past-me asked future-me to revisit? (Decisions)
3. What did last-week-me say this week was about? (Intentions)
4. What did I capture that I never processed? (Stale captures)
Get answers to those four questions and the rest of your day is informed. Skip this scan and you'll work on whatever is loudest, not whatever is most important.
The Five Panels
Overdue Revisits. Decisions whose revisitAt has passed and that have no recorded verdict yet. Each is a learning loop waiting to be closed. Click to navigate straight to the decision detail page.
Due Commitments. Open commitments where dueDate ≤ today. Overdue items render in red, today's in amber. Toggle done inline; the commitment status updates instantly.
Weekly Intentions. The 1-5 intentions you set during your last weekly review. Checkboxes persist to the weekly snapshot. These are the only items on Today that hold persistent state.
Stale Captures. Ideas in RAW status older than 7 days. When the count grows above ~5, your capture-to-triage habit is broken; the recommendations engine will start firing STALE_CAPTURES.
The 2-Minute Scan
A healthy Today scan looks like this:
1. Read the focus project, confirm you still believe in it for this week. (10 seconds)
2. Skim overdue revisits, for each: record a verdict now if obvious, otherwise reschedule. Do not just dismiss. (30 seconds each)
3. Check due commitments, close anything done; reach out about anything that needs to slip. (~1 minute)
4. Tick any completed intentions, visible progress matters; the act of checking is the reward. (15 seconds)
5. Scan stale captures, if 3+, schedule a triage block this week. Don't process them now. (15 seconds)
Total: under two minutes. If yours takes longer, something is overflowing, usually too many active commitments or an abandoned weekly review habit.
When Today Is Empty
An empty Today is a strong signal, either healthy or hidden.
Healthy empty: zero overdue revisits, zero due commitments today, no stale captures. You're up to date. Spend the saved time on deep work, not on creating busywork to fill the screen.
Hidden empty: no commitments at all (you're not making any), no decisions logged (you're operating on instinct), no intentions (you skipped review). This is the more common failure mode and the harder one to diagnose, because nothing alerts you to it. If Today has been empty for two weeks straight, ask whether the system has anything in it to surface.
Common Mistakes
Dismissing revisits without acting. Each dismissed revisit is a learning loop that never closes. Compounded over a year, that's the difference between a founder who learns from their bets and one who repeats them.
Letting stale captures pile up. Three stale captures fires STALE_CAPTURES; ten escalates it to high priority. The system is telling you your capture is faster than your processing, fix the imbalance, don't dismiss the alert.
Treating intentions like tasks. "Finish landing page" is a task. "Get the landing page to a state where I'd show 10 people" is an intention. The first you check off when done; the second you check off when you decide you're satisfied. Big difference.
